Do you need to learn about Degus? If so you've come to the right place!
What is a Degu?
The Scientific explaination:
The Degu is a small caviomorph rodent that is native to Chile. It is sometimes referred to as the Brush-Tailed Rat (although not closely related to the rat family) and is also called the Common Degu, so it can be distinguished from the other members of the genus Octodon. Other members are also called degus, but they are distinguished by additional names. The name "degu" on its own, however, indicates either the genus Octodon or, more usually, O. Degus are closely related to the chinchilla and guinea pig, also placed in parvorder Caviomorpha.
My Explaination:
The Degu is a rodent that originated from Chile (South America). They are related to the chinchilla and the guinea pig. It gets to be about as big as two tennis balls combined. Degus can live around five years if properly cared for, and can be amazing and delightful pets.
What is a Degu's Personality?
A Degu is usually a very social animal. They might not be because of individual personality or the breeder. To check the personality before you buy, you should ask the owner to hold the degus. Just remember- It has a very good memory so anything harmful you do to it will lower it's trust with you. Some things you should not do to your degu: 1.Pull on it's tail because it falls off like a lizard but doesn't regrow 2. Grab at it from above or squeeze it hard. 3. Forget to play with your degus daily, feed them, or clean their cage. 4. Don't feed them fruit because they are Diabetic.
What type of people should get a Degu?
We recommend the degu to those who have patience and are willing to clean up after their pet. You also should be able to keep this animal for 3 to 5 years.
What care does a degu need?
The degu needs daily, personal, out of the cage, interacting to become more social. It also needs a weekly to twice weekly cage cleaning (about 30 min). First put your goos in a carrying or spare cage. Then disassemble the cage, scrub it with dish soap, and hose it down. You next need to cover the bottom of the cage with a few sheets of old news paper, sprinkle on a bit of bedding, put some timothy hay on each level of the house, dump out the contents of the food bowl in the trash and fill it up with fresh Degu or Guinea Pig food. The next step is to rinse out the water bottle, dump it out, and put fresh filtered or bottled water in it. Now you can reassemble the cage and put your goos back in.
Why should I get a degu?
You should get a degu because it teaches you and your family responsibility, gives you amusement, and might help your memory in remembering to feed it.
Why might a degu be a better pet than a dog or an other pet?
If you don't have the time or the would prefer not to have to walk your pet daily a degu would be a good pet rather than a dog, also is also a better pet if you aren't home during the day, but can spend about 1 day a week cleaning the cage and possibly training your degu, it will be a obedient , happy pet.
Is there any down side to owning a degu?
Yes! These are generous poop machines. They also cost a lot. Another downside is that degus mostly are not going to be the Buddy-Buddy pet, meaning that it wont be a creature you can cuddle all day with and train in a second, so be warned.
